Paper composites have been part of our portfolio for decades. Today they are designed with a decreased plastic share, or functions to separate paper and plastic. Paper-based solutions are recyclable in several EU countries with the corresponding recycling infrastructure. To ensure responsible sourcing, we purchase FSC® certified paper and a number of our sites are FSC® COC certified.
Renewable feedstock as a resource in plastic production can increase the share of renewable material in our solutions. Often referred to as bio-based plastic, the renewable feedstock in our films is certified according to ISCC Plus standards. Integrating renewable feedstock in PE, PP or PA brings us closer to a more sustainable future for packaging. An example of using renewable feedstock alternatives is crude tall oil - produced using a residual stream from pulp production. Converting the crude tall oil into bio-naphtha, it can be used to produce resins for plastic packaging. Besides changing to a renewable base for common polymers, we are working closely together with institutes and innovative companies such as Woodly Oy. Woodly® is a unique plastic material that uses cellulose as the main raw material and offers a significantly lowered carbon footprint.
PAPER TOP® PD – is our first climate neutral product range
that integrates both paper and renewable feedstock using a mass balance approach. Paper composites printed on our ProDirect® digital inkjet printing line are not only based on renewables – from July 2021 the composites are a fully climate neutral solution. Prior to this, the production of such composites was optimised, and CO2 emissions were reduced to the minimum possible at that stage.
We offset the remaining carbon emissions through certified climate protection projects in cooperation with ClimatePartner.
By offsetting, we are supporting Plastic Bank’s Clean oceans initiative, ensuring that less plastic ends up in our oceans and is instead reused or recycled in ethical recycling ecosystems. Because these activities do not generate verified emission reductions, the support of such ocean protection initiatives is in combination with internationally recognised carbon offset projects. This allows for climate neutrality and ocean protection at the same time.

from our RENEWABLE category
Production with ProDirect® consumes less energy, creates almost no waste and consumes fewer resources, resulting in a significant CO2 footprint reduction. We’ve even gone the extra mile by integrating bio-based PE using a mass balance approach and offsetting the small, remaining carbon emissions through certified climate protection projects. Our PAPER TOP® PD solutions are all climate neutral as of July 2021.

Correctly separating the components can enable optimal recycling in specific regions or countries where the infrastructure exists. In some countries, the bottom film can be disposed of for recycling via the paper bin.
