At the end of a Packaging Life-Cycle

DISPOSAL

Transparent communication and clear instructions for consumer how to dispose emptied packaging are crucial. In the best case separation of components happens intuitively by consumers.

COLLECTING

Collection at home or at drop off points allows for valuable materials to get a second life.

RECYCLING

Valuable material can get a second life by being recycled. Design for Recycling is of utmost importance to achieve high quality recycled materials that can replace virgin material in the same or other applications.

SORTING

Packaging can only get sorted properly if it can be detected and sorted into a valuable material fraction. Already at that stage Design for Recycling is relevant and with new technologies, like Digital Watermarks, sorting accuracy can be further increased.

When we say our packaging is recyclable, it means that it is designed for recycling, can be collected, sorted and turned into a new material on an industrial scale in specific countries or markets. This recycled material can then be used instead of virgin raw materials.

How can we contribute to better sorting?

Of course, Design for Recycling is a priority and an essential step in supporting better sorting. Alongside it, promising technologies like digital watermarks can support correct sorting at sorting facilities. Equipping packaging with Digmarc® codes is one such solution. The integration of digital watermarks into the printed image of packaging not only supports better sorting but also offers valuable functions throughout the value chain, such as interaction between brands and consumers and the prevention of counterfeiting.
In the Digital Watermarks Initiative HolyGrail 2.0, this technology is being extensively tested in various recycling plants to improve the sorting process. Digimarc® allows for the effective sorting of different packaging components into their respective recycling streams. This advancement will play a significant role in promoting responsible management of packaging waste in the future.
