Wipak Group has taken a crucial step forward in its sustainability journey by committing to set near-term company-wide emission reductions in line with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
This commitment ensures that the Company’s climate actions are aligned with the latest scientific recommendations to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
Dorit Nelke-Bruhn, Sustainability Processes and Patents Manager at Wipak Group, said: “Whilst the latest climate science from the IPCC – described by the UN as “code red for humanity” – shows it is still possible to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C, we are dangerously close to this threshold. Aligning ourselves with the SBTi is not only a commitment, but a strategic move that provides real benefits for the environment and positions us as a forward-thinking company that is fully prepared for future emissions regulations.
“This is exciting news for Wipak Group, with our involvement in the scheme helping to drive innovation in low-carbon products and improved operational efficiencies, giving us a competitive edge in the sustainability space.”
The Company is now working on developing its emissions reduction targets in line with the SBTi’s rigorous criteria. “This process involves a thorough assessment of our current emissions and setting ambitious science-based goals, which must then be submitted to the SBTi for validation,” explained Dorit. “This commitment marks a significant milestone in our journey towards a more sustainable and environmentally responsible future, and by embracing these goals, we aim to inspire other companies across our supply chain to adopt similar targets.”
About the Science Based Targets initiative
The SBTi is a global corporate climate action organization that enables companies and financial institutions to set greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets based on the latest climate science. These targets are crucial for preventing the worst impacts of climate change and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
