Wipak Sales Team Gets a Taste for Insect Protein

feature

With the world’s population estimated to grow to 9 billion by 2050, and approximately 1 billion people already regularly going hungry across the globe today, it is becoming ever-more critical that we address global world hunger.

One identified method of doing this is through sustainable food, which is why our Wipak Sales Teams have come together at various Growth Days over the past few months to learn more about the increasing popularity of insect protein!

“Compared to traditional livestock, like cattle and poultry, insects require a fraction of the land, water and feed needed to be consumption-ready,” explained Florian Constabel from The Wipak Group’s dedicated Innovation Center. “Not only this, but insect farming produces far less greenhouse gases compared to other livestock production, making it one of the most sustainable sources of protein around.

“More than 2 billion people – that’s 29% of the world’s population – include insects to their regular diet, such as grasshoppers, crickets and locusts. Furthermore, the demand for animal protein is expected to grow by around 75% between now and 20501, so it is no surprise that we are starting to see more and more insect-based products enter the European food market,” Florian continued.

“Our recent Growth Days were the perfect opportunity for us to introduce our North, DACH and South Sales staff to the growing demand for insect protein as an ingredient, as well as some of the products that are already appearing on our supermarket shelves – from packs of dehydrated bugs, through to insect protein bars and insect-flour bread. And, of course, we discussed in great detail which of our Wipak films are best-suited to these types of products and their varying requirements!”
